Meet our Operations Director- Larry Harris

Meet Larry Harris, our Operations Director! Larry helps to ensure that the operations of our business here at INFINITI of South Bay run smoothly and efficiently. He helps us in sales, he helps us in service and he helps us in Finance. Basically, Larry is willing to step-in and lend a hand of offer some expertise wherever he is needed within the dealership. We all appreciate Larry’s calm, cool and cooperative demeanor. Larry is a real team player and we are lucky to have him.

Larry grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he was living until recently, where he was working in Finance at a BMW dealership. His entire career has been in the automotive industry, where he has held roles in just about every part of the business. This firsthand experience in so many areas is what makes Larry so valuable.

When Larry visited Southern California, he fell in love with it and ever since then he has wanted to move out West. Little did Larry know that that dream would soon become a reality. When he returned back to North Carolina from his trip, his manager at BMW, Kelvin Bratcher expressed that there was an opportunity at an INFINITI dealership IN CALIFORNIA. WOW, good things happen to good people. Larry accepted the job and within a span of days, he was in California! “Everything played out so perfectly and it all landed right in my lap”, said Harris. “The universe gave me exactly what I was looking for.”

Just before his big move, Larry adopted a dog that is a Labrador and German Shepard mix. He named his dog Gilley. Soon after, Harris’ girlfriend recently moved out to southern California as well. When Larry is not working, they like to go to the beach, hiking, sightseeing and soak up all of what southern California has to offer. He is a big New York Yankees fan and for football he follows the Los Angeles Chargers! The sports that Larry enjoys participating in are golf and basketball. We asked him what his favorite food, and just like most people, he couldn’t pick just one. So, his favorite food(s) are pizza and steak, which are great good choices in our book!

What attracted Larry to INFINITI of South Bay was the once in a lifetime opportunity to help run a dealership. And to top it off, he is doing that with his Manger at BMW, who is now the Owner & General Manager at INFINITI of South Bay. Kelvin and Larry together have put the right processes in place and motivated their teams to consistently be one of the top performing dealerships in Southern California.

Harris’ favorite part about working at INFINITI of South Bay are the customers. You can always find him out and about somewhere in the dealership helping customers. “It’s important to love coming to work and love what you do, it really makes a difference”, said Harris, and that is 100% true. He loves his job, the people he works with and his customers - and it shows! We are so grateful to have him on our team!

What Causes Battery Corrosion?

The INFINITI of South Bay service team is here to help you stay informed about your vehicle, and one of the more common questions we hear about is battery corrosion.
Car batteries aren’t meant to last forever; it’s the unavoidable truth. Your car’s battery is meant to power the starter and several other electrical components. Battery corrosion forms for the following reasons:

  • Electrolyte Leaking from the Terminals
  • Overfilling the Battery
  • Overcharging the Battery
  • Atmospheric Chemical Reactions
  • Electro-Chemical Reactions in the Copper Clamps
  • Battery Age

Though you will eventually need to replace your battery, you can do more to protect your it, like ensuring that it stays dry as much as possible, never allowing it to completely drain, and using special battery-cleaning products. Keep an eye out for signs of trouble, like difficulty starting your engine as this could be a sign of issues with the battery or battery charging system.
Does your car seem hesitant on startup? Our Service Team can also help. Bring your vehicle in and you’ll receive the professional opinion of factory-certified technicians in our cutting-edge facility. You can simply drive up or easily schedule an appointment online. Happy driving!

Know the Signs of Worn Out Brakes

Too often, brakes don’t become an issue until they… break. Waiting for an emergency to check up on your brakes is risky business, dangerous for both you and everyone else on the road. Play it safe and assess the health of your brakes on a regular basis. The INFINITI of South Bay Service Center is here to help.

How They Work

Essentially, the braking system in a car is all about creating friction. A braking material is pressed against a secondary material that rotates along with the wheel. The secondary material has two forms: brake drums and disc brakes.
Even though it’s called a drum, a brake drum looks more like a top hat, with the wheel mounted on the hat’s closed end. Drums are normally found in older or less expensive vehicles. There are two curved “shoes” inside the drum, lined with friction material. While the wheel turns, the shoes hold just off the surface of the drum. When you press on the brake, hydraulic fluid transfers braking force to the shoes that then push outwards to press the friction material against the rotating drum. The harder the pressure on the pedal, the more force applied by the shoes, and the faster the wheel stops.

A disc brake system works the same way as the drum system, except instead of a drum and shoes, it consists of a rotor (the disc) that mounts behind and turns with the wheel and a caliper that holds two pads of friction material (brake pads) mounted over the rotor. Pressing on the brake causes the pads to pinch the disc that rests just off the surface of the disc, similar to the shoes in the drum system. Hydraulic fluid transfers pressure to the pads, pressing them together, forcing a slower rotation of both the discs and wheels.

How To Monitor the Health of Your Brakes

Pay attention to both foot feel and sound. Your brake pedal should feel firm and hard under pressure, and pressing the brakes should result in quiet, smooth deceleration.

Signs of Unhealthy Brakes

Bring your brakes into INFINITI of South Bay for a checkup if they display any of the following symptoms:

  • Pulsing in the brake pedal is not good. It normally indicates a warped rotor, which should be replaced immediately.
  • Soft/spongy pedal response means some air has entered the hydraulic system. Air hinders the power of your brakes, and the hydraulic system should be serviced ASAP.
  • No resistance when pressed means there’s a serious problem. No response at all is the worst response and could indicate a complete brake failure. Take that foot off the gas, shift into neutral, turn off the engine, pull the emergency brake, and call for help.
  • Loud screeching is never a good thing, but coming from your brakes it could mean the friction material in your system is either wearing away or totally gone. Friction material that’s worn away is a much more common brake issue than complete brake failure.

On the road, your brakes are your safety net, and well worth regular care. Take a break from worry with a brake health checkup at the INFINITI of South Bay Service Department.

How Do I Know If My Spark Plugs Need to Be Replaced?

Internal combustion engines need three basic elements to run—fuel, air, and spark. Air moves into the engine via the air intake, fuel is added to the cylinders through the fuel injectors, and spark is added by the spark plugs. To power your engine, the air/fuel mixture is compressed on the piston’s upward stroke. Once the piston reaches the top of its stroke, the spark plug conducts a spark that ignites the mixture, sending the piston on its downward stroke.

This cycle happens constantly as you drive, meaning your spark plugs fire hundreds of times per minute, just when your engine is idling and thousands of times per minute as you drive. That little spark is essential to your engine’s efficiency and power production. If the spark is weak, it may not burn all of the fuel in the cylinder, resulting in poor performance.

There is one spark plug per cylinder, so if you drive a vehicle with a four-cylinder engine, your engine has four spark plugs. Just one bad spark plug can cause problems, and if all of them go bad, your engine cannot run. Most auto manufacturers suggest replacement every 30,000 miles or so, but that depends heavily on the type of materials used to make your spark plug. The more durable the materials, the longer the spark plug will last.

Know your car and pay attention to some of these signs of worn-out spark plugs:

  • Rough or hesitant start-up
  • Bucking or chugging feeling when you accelerate
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • A check engine light
  • Exhaust that smells like unburned fuel
  • Rough idle

Here at INFINITI of South Bay we always make sure every vehicle in our inventory is running in top shape, so contact us today if you’re looking for your next great vehicle. Remember, proper maintenance is preferable to waiting too long and having to do a much costlier replacement.

When Should I Replace My Engine Air Filter?

INFINITI of South Bay knows it’s difficult to remember all of the important parts of your vehicle that need occasional checking up on. Your engine air filter is a little something that makes a huge difference. You might not even realize it’s there until it’s clogged, but an engine filter check is a worthwhile investment to avoid bigger problems down the road, like costly engine replacement.

How it Works

Your filter is made out of material, like paper, foam, or cotton, that contains large sponge-like pores designed to let air in and keep abrasive particles out. To allow airflow with minimal resistance while also trapping the maximum amount of dirt and dust particles, filter designers use the largest surface area of material as possible and fold it into a series of corrugations to make the filter fit into its “housing” in your vehicle.

Healthy Engine Filter

Every car, driver, road, and combination of the three is different, so it’s hard to diagnose whether or not your engine filter is healthy based on day-to-day driving experience. The best way to check its health is to visually check it yourself. If you can get to your engine filter, take a look at it. If it is clean, and you aren’t experiencing any engine performance issues, you likely have a healthy filter on your hands.

Unhealthy Engine Filter

If your filter is exhibiting any of these symptoms, take it in for a check-up.
Black areas on the section of the filter where outside air enters could mean there’s some build-up that needs to be addressed. Without an expert’s eye, it’s hard to tell whether or not your filter’s level of build-up is safe. Take your car in for a filter-check ASAP.

Age plays a major role in filter efficiency. The range for filter use varies significantly, roughly 15,000 to 30,000 miles between replacements, depending on the manufacturer. However, this number is largely affected by the type of roads you normally take. If you spend a significant amount of time on dirty, dusty roads with ever-present debris, a frequent engine filter check is in your best interest.

Leaving a faulty filter in place for too long can lead to expensive engine damage down the road. If you have any doubts, or if you are unsure of the last time your engine filter was replaced, it’s worth some attention. A stop by our service department for a filter check will help both you and your car breathe easier.

Why Are Oil Changes Important?

Oil changes are the most common type of regular maintenance. Almost everyone who owns a vehicle knows that they need to have their oil changed regularly, but not everyone knows why the service is so important. The team here at INFINITI of South Bay wants you to understand the importance of this vital service, and why neglecting to change your oil could be catastrophic for your engine.

Motor oil lubricates the moving components inside your engine, from the crankshaft to the camshafts, and everything in between. It reduces wear and friction on the metal components that have very specific tolerances. It also cleans your engine, removing the debris, carbon, and sludge that build up over time, by trapping the contaminants in the oil. However, as the oil cleans and lubricates your engine it becomes less effective because it’s dirty. The dirtier the oil, the more difficult it is for your car to perform the way you expect it to.

It seems easy to let an oil change slide. Is it really that urgent? The truth is, it is that urgent. Dirty oil can burn off, meaning you won’t have enough oil in your engine to properly lubricate the internals, which will lead to major engine failure. It can also damage the seals inside of your engine, leading to costly repairs. As your engine heats up and cools down the oil goes through thermal breakdown, which decreases the viscosity of the oil. The result is that instead of the moving joints operating smoothly, they’ll rub against each other, causing wear and tear.

Checking Your Car Oil - Metroplex CDJR in Dallas, TX
A quick look at your engine oil’s dipstick can tell you a lot about the health of your engine:

  • Honey-colored oil: this oil is fresh and free of debris
  • Dark Brown oil: it may be time for an oil change
  • Gritty texture: oil may contain dirt or small pieces of metal
  • Foamy, grey, or mixed with coolant: possible head gasket failure

If your oil looks dirty, it may be time to schedule an oil change. Don’t wait until it’s too late. The service team here at INFINITI of South Bay can choose the oil weight that works best for your car and climate, as well as make sure there are no signs of trouble.

How Does Tire Pressure Affect Fuel Economy?

When you’re shopping for a car, fuel economy is probably a hot topic of discussion. It directly affects your bottom line, whether you’re looking for a personal or business vehicle, and that makes it worth your time to consider. What you might not realize is that the focus on fuel economy shouldn’t stop when you’ve made your purchase decision; maintenance ensures you continue to achieve great fuel economy. Tire pressure plays a big part.

Did you know that you can improve your gas mileage simply by keeping your tires inflated to the recommended pressure? Tires naturally lose 1 pound per square inch (PSI) of pressure per month. For every 1 PSI drop in your average tire pressure, you’re losing about half of a percentage point of efficiency in your fuel economy.

Luckily, low tire pressure is a simple problem to avoid. Regularly checking the air pressure in your tires is easy to do, and you’ll typically find the proper tire pressure for your vehicle on a sticker in the driver’s side door or the glove box, as well as in your owner’s manual. The PSI that is stamped on the wall of the tire itself is the maximum air pressure for the tire, and not the optimum pressure you should shoot for.

Temperature also has a major impact on tires. Within any given day, temperatures can swing 20°F or more, affecting tire pressure and consequently fuel economy. Potentially, your vehicle’s tire pressure will decrease as much as two pounds for every ten-degree temperature drop. Imagine then, as you transition from summer to winter, a drop of 50°F daily average translates to about 5-10 PSI under-inflation. Each season change is a great time to check your tire pressure and make adjustments.

While low tire pressure can negatively impact fuel economy, the inverse is not true. Over-inflating your tires does not increase gas mileage; in fact, it can potentially do some damage to your tires if they are inflated to the maximum pressure. Your best bet is to stay with the PSI recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.

Conclusion

Get the maximum return on investment for everything related to your automobile. Maintaining the proper tire pressure will allow you to get the best performance, longest durability, and optimum fuel economy from your purchase. And a very simple routine of inspecting your tires and keeping the proper PSI could save you hundreds of dollars over the life of the tires.

The INFINITI of South Bay Service Department is always happy to help you check your tires to ensure they are in tip-top shape. Contact us online to schedule any service or give us a call to ask any questions!

Keeping Your Vehicle’s Upholstery Fresh All Summer

Summer is perfect for road trips to the beach, mountains, or just the park. Unfortunately, those trips mean more mess for your car’s upholstery. From food crumbs to spilled drinks and sand, summer is rough on your car, and it’s important to keep it clean. There are many different chemical cleaners on the market, but there are a few simple options that may be available right in your kitchen to try first. Baking soda, for instance, can absorb odors and clean at the same time. All you need is a toothbrush and a little elbow grease.

Club soda is another inexpensive way to clean up a spill, especially ink, and fruit juices and sports drinks that include some kind of dye. As soon as possible, use paper or cloth towels to sop up the liquid, and then apply the club soda to dissolve the stain with effervescence. The sooner you get to the stain, the less likely it is to leave a permanent mark that becomes an eyesore that decreases the value of your car.

Summer is sunscreen city (don’t forget your SPF!) but you and your kids may leave a greasy residue on your seats if you apply before you go or as you’re leaving the beach. If a dollop of sunscreen falls on the upholstery, don’t reach for that cloth yet! Rubbing the seat will only push it deeper into the layers of fabric. Quickly grab a flat piece of card stock, a business card, or a spoon to lift the sunscreen away from the seat. Even that valet ticket from three days ago will lift the lotion away.

Next, you can get to work. First, always clean a test area first; all upholstery is not equal. If one doesn’t work for you, check with a service professional for a commercial cleaner recommendation that works best for your vehicle.

Try mixing a solution of one teaspoon liquid dishwashing detergent with one cup warm water. If you have hard and not soft water in your home, use bottled distilled water to clean. Start with a white cloth, toothbrush (not yours, of course), or soft-bristled brush in the soapy liquid and blot with a dry light or white cloth. Repeat as necessary. And don’t forget to rinse with a clean cloth and water, because the soap residue will attract more dirt. Let it dry in the shade, and then hit it with a vacuum to pull out any remaining flakes and stain.

www.infinitiofsouthbay.com

Conclusion

With a little love and care, your vehicle will make it through the summer looking and smelling as clean and fresh as the spring.

If you have a stubborn spill that is driving you crazy, try visiting a professional detailer to get your vehicle deep cleaned. If you want to start with a clean slate and a newer vehicle,
